Art
At SJEDS, visual arts instruction begins in Pre-K3 and continues through sixth grade, allowing students to develop creativity, technique, and artistic confidence from a young age. Students are introduced to the elements of art and principles of design early on, and each year builds upon the last as they explore new concepts and strengthen their skills. They work with a variety of materials including chalk, oil pastels, tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paints, and learn techniques such as printmaking, weaving, and perspective drawing. Students also gain an appreciation for different artistic styles and are introduced to the works of notable artists.
One of the most cherished SJEDS traditions begins in first grade when each student handcrafts a clay figure for a nativity scene. With a new piece added each year, students complete their own full set by the time they graduate from sixth grade. It becomes a meaningful and one-of-a-kind keepsake that celebrates their growth and creativity over the years.
