The Bear's Den
At San Jose Episcopal Day School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive academically. In keeping with this commitment, we offer The Bear's Den, a dedicated academic support program tailored to students with diagnosed learning differences. This program provides individualized strategies, resources, and accommodations to help students succeed within the framework of our rigorous academic environment.
Targeted Support for Diagnosed Learning Differences
The Bear’s Den is reserved for students with documented learning differences that significantly impact their academic performance. Participation in the program requires a current psychoeducational evaluation or formal diagnosis. Common qualifying diagnoses include ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Hearing Impairment.
Under the guidance of our Learning Specialist, Tracy Pohlhaus (tpohlhaus@sjeds.org), students receive focused instruction through evidence-based, multisensory, and explicit teaching methods. Instruction may be delivered one-on-one or in small groups and is designed to meet each learner’s unique needs. Support may also include assistive technology, positive behavioral strategies, peer mentoring, and classroom tools like visual aids, graphic organizers, and self-monitoring techniques.
Collaborative Planning and Comprehensive Services
Central to the Bear’s Den is collaboration. The Learning Specialist partners with parents, classroom teachers, and outside professionals to develop customized Learning Plans that address each student’s strengths and challenges. She also coordinates standardized testing accommodations and works closely with Duval County Public Schools to facilitate access to services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy for qualifying students.
Additionally, the Learning Specialist oversees all on-campus tutoring, ensuring a strong match between teacher expertise and student need. Through these efforts, the Bear’s Den exemplifies our holistic approach to student success—empowering every learner with the tools and confidence to reach their full potential.
